Mt. Vernon student will be drum major in Rose Bowl parade

Mt. Vernon High School Fine Arts Academy Senior Andrew Higgins, who had previously been selected as a trombonist for the 2013 Music For All’s Band of America Honor Band, which will perform at the Rose Bowl Parade in Pasadena, California on New Year’s Day, has now been selected as a Drum Major for the Rose Bowl Honor Band.  Higgins was chosen for this prestigious position during the Drum Major Academy Summer Symposium by Academy staff and instructors.

During the week of June 23, over 1500 students gathered on the campus of Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana for the Music for All Summer Symposium, presented by Yamaha.  Of those attending, approximately 350 students participated in the George Parks Drum Major Academy.  Drum major participants were given the opportunity to interview and audition for the position of Drum Major for the 2013 Music For All’s Band of American Honor Band which will perform in the Rose Bowl Parade.

Higgins, who had previously auditioned and had been chosen to play the trombone in the Rose Bowl Honor Band, was the only student chosen as a Rose Bowl drum major at the Ball State Symposium.  Eventually, four drum majors from across the United States will be chosen to lead the 300+ member national honor band at the New Year’s Day parade.

Andrew Higgins is the drum major for the Mt. Vernon Senior High School Marching Band, under the direction of Band Director Cory Mullins.  He's is also a member of the Wolfgang Orchestra and studies privately with Melanie Edling Music Studio.

Andrew is the son of Brian and Beth McFadin Higgins.
