New buildings coming for Mt. Vernon Police, Fire | Community Spirit
Since 1893, the police and fire departments in Mount Vernon have been working out of the same building. Times have changed, and so have the needs of both departments.
Just this week, the city announced those departments are getting a new home.
An old car dealership on Fourth Street has been vacant for some time. Mount Vernon will now renovate that facility, with an addition to house the fire trucks.
Fire Chief Wes Dixon says renovations are slated to cost about one million dollars. The cost will be split between the city of Mount Vernon, Black Township Trustees, and fundraising efforts.
To help with fundraising, Council member Becky Higgins tells 14 News that they're bringing back an old tradition. In April or June, Higgins says Mount Vernon will host a Policeman and Fireman's Ball.
They're hoping to break ground on the project in June. If all goes well, the police and fire departments will move in by the end of this year.
