IDOE releases third grade reading test results

IDOE releases third grade reading test results

Superintendent of Public Instruction Dr. Tony Bennett today announced the results of the first administration of Indiana’s third grade reading assessment, called the Indiana Reading Evaluation and Determination for grade 3 (IREAD-3). Statewide, 84 percent of students assessed during the March 19-21 testing window demonstrated foundational third grade reading skills.

“Our goal is to make sure all students in Indiana gain the reading skills they need to be successful in school and life,” Bennett said. “We know students who do not have these skills by the end of grade 3 rarely catch up to their peers. The IREAD-3 assessment helps educators and parents ensure all children receive the support they need before moving forward with more challenging reading instruction.”

Water pollution control agency studying Wabash River

The Ohio River Valley Water Sanitation Commission (ORSANCO) is engaged in a study of the Wabash River to determine the amount of nitrogen and phosphorous the Wabash contributes to the Ohio River.

The Wabash has been identified as one of the largest contributors of nitrogen to the hypoxic zone in the northern Gulf of Mexico.  In addition, data has shown that the area where the Wabash enters the Ohio River (at the upstream end of the Smithland Pool) has lower dissolved oxygen levels and is designated as “impaired” in ORSANCO’s 2008 Assessment of Water Quality Conditions.

Easter Seals needs your online vote to pay for flooring

Easter Seals needs your online vote to pay for flooring

Greer's Flooring America is sponsoring the Easter Seals Rehabilitation Center to WIN $10,000 in new, much needed flooring for their east side facility.  They are not asking for donations-- just a few minutes of time to cast an online vote is all it takes to make a difference.

They are currently in first place in this nationwide contest but need to keep those votes coming.

According to Greer's representatives, winning would enable Easter Seals to put their money towards actual therapy- instead of spending so much on renovations for the facility.
